Background of the Study
Post-abortion complications, including infection, hemorrhage, and injury to the reproductive organs, are major causes of maternal morbidity and mortality in many countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite the increasing recognition of safe abortion care, unsafe abortions and subsequent complications continue to affect women in regions with limited access to reproductive health services. Nurses play a crucial role in managing post-abortion care, including the prevention and management of complications such as hemorrhage, sepsis, and psychological distress. The preparedness of nurses in handling these complications is vital for improving outcomes and reducing the risks associated with post-abortion care.
Niger State General Hospital, located in the central region of Nigeria, is one of the primary healthcare institutions in the region, providing reproductive health services, including post-abortion care. However, concerns have been raised regarding the preparedness of healthcare providers, particularly nurses, in managing post-abortion complications. Factors such as inadequate training, insufficient resources, and cultural barriers may affect the readiness of nurses to respond effectively to post-abortion complications. This study seeks to assess the preparedness of nurses at Niger State General Hospital in managing these complications, with a focus on knowledge, skills, and available resources.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the essential role of nurses in post-abortion care, there are concerns about their preparedness to manage post-abortion complications, which can lead to severe maternal health issues. At Niger State General Hospital, there may be gaps in the knowledge, skills, and resources available to nurses for managing post-abortion complications, which may contribute to adverse health outcomes. The assessment of nurses' preparedness is essential to understand the extent of these gaps and inform necessary interventions for improving post-abortion care.
